Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo showed no signs of his collarbone injury as the German Grand Prix weekend at the Sachsenring got underway, with the reigning World Champion topping the timesheets in opening practice. The Spaniard, who posted a personal best effort of 1:22.047, led compatriot Dani Pedrosa by 0.174 seconds.

With the top spot swapping hands on multiple occasions in the first half of the session, Lorenzo ultimately stamped his authority over the field during a six lap run, moving to the front gradually edging clear. His position at the top was then secured with a rapid late attempt, with Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi almost two tenths back.

Marc Marquez finished fourth quickest in the opening session, fending off Stefan Bradl who also spent a brief phase at the front. Cal Crutchlow held on to sixth after a fall at the first corner, just ahead of Aleix Espargaro who again led the CRT battle.

Nicky Hayden edged out Gresini's Alvaro Bautista for eighth position, while Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, who completed the top ten, escaped unharmed from a massive high-side. Andrea Ianonne was another to end his session in the gravel, with the rear-end of his Pramac Ducati collapsing after a dramatic crash at Turn 11.
