Gasly feels sorry for Kvyat over STR switch

Formula 1 debutant Pierre Gasly says he "feels sorry" for Daniil Kvyat after taking his seat at Toro Rosso in a late-season switch.

Kvyat has been "stood down" for the Malaysian and Japanese events, amid a challenging campaign, with GP2 champion and Super Formula title contender Gasly given an F1 shot.

Although delighted with the opportunity, the Frenchman has admitted that he feels for Kvyat, who was also demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso early last year.

"Unfortunately, that's how it works in this sport," commented Gasly.

"He's been in my position, before he came to F1, waiting for his chance, and then he had to take the seat of someone else.

"Of course, I feel sorry for him. I think he's a really good driver, talented.

"Unfortunately, it's happening that I'm going to take his seat, but I'm pretty sure we'll see him back on the grid at some point."

Carlos Sainz Jr., who has scored 48 points to Kvyat's four since the aforementioned Red Bull/Toro Rosso shuffle, also shared his thoughts.

"Let's say that in the middle of a season when you are so focused on your driving, you cannot really be affected by what goes on in the other side of the garage," he said.

"I've switched team-mates in Formula 1 a few times now, and I've remained focused on my own job, trying not to think what goes on on the other side.

"With Red Bull it just works like that, and you need to be ready for that.

"I haven't had a chance to speak with Daniil yet, because I have been focused on this weekend, but I'm sure that I will."
