Toro Rosso confirms Hartley for Austin

Toro Rosso has confirmed that Brendon Hartley will make his Formula 1 debut with Toro Rosso at the United States Grand Prix, in place of Pierre Gasly, who will compete for the Super Formula title at Suzuka.

Hartley was part of Red Bull's junior academy and sampled Formula 1 machinery, most recently with Mercedes in 2012, before switching to the World Endurance Championship.

He was crowned WEC champion in 2015 and currently leads the 2017 standings, having taken overall victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours this year.

Hartley will step into the STR12 vacated by Gasly, who made his Formula 1 debut in Malaysia, before remaining in the car in Japan, alongside Carlos Sainz Jr.

Toro Rosso initially confirmed that Gasly and Daniil Kvyat would form the team's line-up in Austin, but Gasly will instead race in the Super Formula finale, in which he stands a chance of taking the title.

With Sainz Jr. moving to Renault, and Gasly unavailable due to his clashing Super Formula commitment, Toro Rosso has recruited Hartley to make his Formula 1 bow.

"What an amazing feeling," said Hartley.

"This opportunity came as somewhat of a surprise, but I never did give up on my ambition and childhood dream to reach F1.

"I have grown and learnt so much since the days when I was the Red Bull and Toro Rosso reserve driver, and the tough years I went through made me stronger and even more determined.

"I want to say a huge thanks to Red Bull for making this a reality, and to Porsche for allowing me to do this alongside the World Endurance Championship.

"COTA is a track I really enjoy and one I have raced at recently.

"I'm trying not to put too many expectations on my F1 debut, but I feel ready for it."
