Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has labelled the performances of his son Lance during the 2020 Formula 1 season as “very impressive”.

The young Canadia finished 11th in the drivers’ championship with 75 points for Racing Point last season, having been on the podium twice and secured his maiden pole position at the Turkish Grand Prix.

His teammate Sergio Perez ended the year fourth in the standings with 125 points and a race win but was dropped halfway through the campaign in favour of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

There have been suggestions that Lance should have made way for Vettel rather than Perez given the Mexican’s record in the sport and their comparative performance levels, but Stroll senior has now come to his son’s defence.

“Lance’s performance on track last year for a 21-year-old was extremely impressive,” he told BBC Sport.

“There was the pole in Turkey, when we all know in the wet it is more about the driver than the car, leading the race for 30 laps until part of the front wing broke.

“There were two podiums and some bad luck – a tyre blew at Mugello – that would have been another podium.

“At 21, he did a stellar job, an incredible job. I wish him, like any father would wish any son, the best he could possibly do, as long as it makes him happy – that’s what counts.

“Last year we had a good car. This year we will have a different level of excitement and motivation because of Aston Martin.

“We’ve got more people, we have the new factory coming, it’s all exciting but his performance on track last year demonstrated he has the ability to perform very well.”

With the Silverstone-based outfit becoming Aston Martin F1 ahead of the new season, it will be fascinating to see how Stroll, Vettel and the team as a whole get on.
